Apple WWDC kicks off June 9 with big software updates

TL;DR: Apple’s 36th annual Worldwide Developers Conference will take place from June 9 – 13 where Apple Intelligence may take the center stage (again) despite recent hurdles. Expected announcements include iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, tvOS 19, and visionOS 3 – some of which are rumored to receive their first major design overhaul in over a decade.

WWDC 2025 will be mainly an online event, free for all developers to attend through the Apple Developer app, Apple’s website, and YouTube. The event will include virtual sessions and labs designed to help developers explore the latest software updates and integrate new features into their apps.

This year Apple is organizing a special in-person experience for a select group of developers and students. This exclusive gathering will be held on June 9 at Apple Park in Cupertino.

During the event, Apple is expected to introduce new versions of all its operating systems, namely iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, tvOS 19, and visionOS 3. However, no major hardware reveals are anticipated.

Rumor is that iOS, iPadOS, and macOS could get a “dramatic” software overhaul that will revamp their look and feel. This would be the biggest redesign for iOS and macOS since iOS 7 (2013) and macOS 11 Big Sur (2020).

The visual changes in the operating systems are reportedly inspired by visionOS, the OS behind the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. Users can expect redesigned icons, menus, and other system elements aimed at delivering a more unified and streamlined experience across Apple’s ecosystem.

While Siri may receive a few new AI capabilities, Apple has confirmed that more personalized Siri features will be delayed until 2026 – despite earlier indications that AI-powered improvements were coming in 2025. Other AI features announced last year are also not expected to launch with iOS 19, though they may roll out gradually in the months that follow.

iPhone users may also see a redesigned Camera app with a cleaner interface and simplified controls, while FaceTime is expected to become a more immersive experience with enhanced spatial audio. Additional rumored features include AI-powered app suggestions.

macOS 16 is rumored to incorporate more iOS-like elements, fueling speculation about the possibility (though very unlikely) of touchscreen MacBooks in the future. Meanwhile, watchOS 12 is said to introduce features like blood pressure monitoring, glucose tracking (pending regulatory approval), and new fitness tools – though these reports remain unconfirmed.

Although Apple has occasionally used WWDC to announce hardware products – such as the Apple Vision Pro in 2023 – no new hardware announcements are expected this year. There is some speculation that Apple might tease the iPhone 17 Air or a new Mac Pro, but the actual launch of those products wouldn’t be until later in the year.
