Square Enix is aiming for a remake of the title that goes above and beyond what traditional remasters do, based on reports.

Square Enix is diving back into its beloved Dragon Quest classics, as reports suggest that the company is working on a full remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The remake is expected to be released in 2026. This news comes courtesy of MP1st, which claims to have seen “internal documents” summarizing Square Enix’s upcoming projects.

This development is a step above the company’s recent Dragon Quest HD-2D Remake strategy. The upcoming Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake are slated for an October 30, 2025, release date, but Dragon Quest VII is reported to be a full “remake” project, instead of an “HD remake” or remaster.

According to the report, the game will delve deeper, offering large gameplay and structural changes instead of simply bumping up the resolution and polished textures.

Further strengthening claims, Bloomberg Journalist Jason Schreier has subtly hinted at the project’s legitimacy. On ResetEra, Schreier commented, “I think it’s safe to say that Square wants to remake as many DQ games as possible for modern platforms. I didn’t say there’s no remake!”

Square Enix is currently on a revival run for Dragon Quest. The company garnered widespread success with Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which sold over 2 million copies in less than a month after its debut in November 2024.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake became the best-selling title in Japan within one week of release. The game sold a combined 821,770 units on the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Dragon Quest VII launched on the original PlayStation in Japan in August 2000. The game became one of the best-selling titles in Japan, selling 4.06 million copies. According to creator Yuji Horii, the transition from cartridges to CD-ROM meant much more headroom to create a DQ title with a massive scope.

Hence, Horii noted, “We went overboard and made too much game.” To put things into perspective, the documentation for Dragon Quest VII for the PS1 was so extensive that producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto stated it as going “from this wall to the other.”

It’s speculated that Dragon Quest VII Remake could debut sometime between the release of Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake in October 2025 and Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Fate, which was originally announced in May 2021.
