GTA 6 should prioritize detailed graphics over 60 fps, according to former Rockstar Games dev – NotebookCheck.net News

When the GTA 6 release date finally arrives, it may limit consoles to 30 fps. A former Rockstar Games technical director argues that 60 fps is more vital for competitive multiplayer games. Even the PS5 Pro may not have enough horsepower to produce smoother visuals.

The last GTA 6 trailer showcased detailed textures, with realistic lighting and reflections. Unfortunately, the Rockstar Games title could stress the PS5 and Xbox Series X to the point of exhaustion. To make the game playable on existing consoles, a former technical director for several GTA projects suggests frame rate caps.

Vermeij left Rockstar Games after the debut of GTA 4 in 2009. On social media, a poster asked him why a 60 fps option in GTA 6 would pose so many technical challenges. Vermeij explained that a higher frame rate is possible, but it would come at the cost of visual fidelity. Since the cinematic adventure doesn’t focus on competitive multiplayer, 30 fps is the practical choice.

With frame rate a sensitive subject, not all gamers will applaud Vermeij’s comments. More recent games render graphics at 60 fps than in past eras. At the same time, the aging PS5 and Xbox Series X may fail to handle the most cutting-edge titles.

The PS5 Pro may seem like the obvious solution, but Digital Foundry doubts it would be a major difference maker. The benchmarkers explained that the console’s identical CPU would struggle with the complex open world of GTA 6. Not only will the game feature more characters on screen, but fine details, such as hair strands, will also move realistically. Still, a recent rumor suggested that 60 fps may still be a possibility. Also, other developers point out that few games realize the potential of the PS5 Pro.

If the first or second GTA 6 trailer is any indication, the PS6 is more likely to support a 60 fps performance mode. While the system may not arrive until 2027 or later, delays with the game could prove beneficial. The GTA 6 release date is currently May 26th, 2026, but another slippage could push its debut closer to the next console generation.
