Final Fantasy XIV will be released for the PS6 and next-gen Xbox, but director Naoki Yoshida feels these consoles are not needed. The current gen consoles are quite powerful and the new hardware would be quite expensive.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles were released in 2020 and just five years later, there are reports of the next generation hardware in development. These next-gen consoles are expected to come with significant performance upgrades over the current generation. While the director of Final Fantasy XIV, a game that released in 2010, appreciates that aspect, he believes gamers don’t really need the next consoles.
In an interview with Feed4Gamers, Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) from Square Enix spoke about Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail and the game’s future. When asked about the next generation of consoles and whether Final Fantasy XIV will be released for the PS6 and next Xbox, Yoshida stated, “But when I look at things from a gamer’s perspective, I feel that there’s no real need to make new hardware, because I think right now people are happy with the Xbox Series X, the PS5 or the Switch 2.” He went on to say, “And honestly, from a gamer’s perspective as well, hardware is just expensive to buy.”
Price is definitely becoming a concern as reports have hinted towards a possible next-gen Xbox that would cost $1,000 or more. The PS6, however, isn’t expected to bring such a massive price increase.
That being said, Yoshida does appreciate how powerful these consoles have become. Even the current generation PS5 and Xbox Series consoles are quite powerful so porting over games is much easier. In that regards, new hardware would be a welcome addition. Furthermore, whenever the new consoles launch, Final Fantasy XIV will most likely be optimized for them as well since its a new way to reach more players, said Yoshida.
