We have GOT to talk about today’s NYT Connections puzzle. Don’t even go there with the purple category. As an English major I probably knew this category at one point, but not anymore. However, as the co-author of The Totally Sweet 90s, a pop-culture book about the 1990s, it’s the blue category that almost had me spitting out my Jolt Cola.  Read on for clues and today’s Connections answers, plus the funniest blue category ever.

The Times now has a Connections Bot, like the one for Wordle. Go there after you play to receive a numeric score and to have the program analyze your answers. Players who are registered with the Times Games section can now nerd out by following their progress, including the number of puzzles completed, win rate, number of times they nabbed a perfect score and their win streak.

Here are four hints for the groupings in today’s Connections puzzle, ranked from the easiest yellow group to the tough (and sometimes bizarre) purple group.

    Yellow group hint: @$%!^&!

Green group hint:  Come on, New York Times, don’t rush the season.

Blue group hint: A retro pal for Barbie and possibly the best Connections category ever.

Purple group hint: Look at the front of each word.

    Answers for today’s Connections groups

    Yellow group: Curses.

Green group: In “A Visit From Saint Nicholas.”

Blue group: Worn by Earring Magic Ken.

Purple group: Starting with possessive determiners.

    What are today’s Connections answers?

The completed NYT Connections puzzle for Sept. 2, 2025, #814.

    NYT/Screenshot by CNET

The yellow words in today’s Connections

The theme is curses. The four answers are expletives, four-letter words, profanity and swearing.

The green words in today’s Connections

The theme is in “A Visit From St. Nicholas.” The four answers are Christmas, house, mouse and stirring.

The blue words in today’s Connections

The theme is worn by Earring Magic Ken. The four answers are earring, mesh shirt, necklace and pleather vest. (Earring Magic Ken is a legendary and short-lived Ken doll released in 1993 and quickly yanked from the market because, um, reasons. This is a hilarious category and I commend the New York Times for coming up with it.)

The purple words in today’s Connections

The theme is starting with possessive determiners. The four answers are herring, histamine, mystery and ouroboros. (Possessive determiners are words that show possession or belonging and are used in front of a noun. So, these four are her, his, my and our.)
