A Minecraft Movie sequel greenlit for July 23, 2027
Jared Hess returns to direct and co-write screenplay with Chris Galletta
Warner Bros. has greenlit a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, which is set to premiere on July 23, 2027.
As Variety reports, Jared Hess will return to direct as well as co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta.
The film’s plot and cast have not been disclosed yet, but Jason Momoa will produce the film alongside Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólafsson.
The first Minecraft movie, which premiered earlier this year, earned $157 million domestically and $301 million globally during its opening weekend.
It surpassed expectations, with Warner Bros. estimating the film to earn between $70 million and $80 with a budget of $150 million.
By the end of its premiere month, it had generated $550 million globally. It ended its box office run with $957 million.
A Minecraft Movie is the second highest-grossing film of 2025, with Disney’s Lilo and Stich live remake taking in the lead with $1.03 billion.
Last month, research by Ampere Analysis found that Minecraft’s monthly active users increased 30% in April following the release of A Minecraft Movie, 54% of which were lapsed players.
GamesIndustry.biz also spoke with experts about how the success of the film could lead to video game adaptations taking over Hollywood.
