Microsoft: Windows bug blocks Microsoft 365 desktop app installs

Microsoft is working to resolve a known issue preventing users from installing the Microsoft 365 desktop apps on Windows devices.

In a Friday service alert seen by BleepingComputer, Microsoft said that this bug is caused by misconfigured authentication components and may affect any customer attempting to install Microsoft 365 desktop apps version 2508 (Build 19127.20358) and version 2507 (Build 19029.20294).

The Microsoft 365 team is now reconfiguring the impacted authentication components and estimates that a final fix will be rolled out later today.

“A newly released set of authentication components contain a misconfiguration that prevents users from installing Microsoft 365 desktop apps on Windows devices,” Microsoft said in a Friday update.

“We’re continuing to develop a set of two builds that address the authentication component misconfigurations, with the build for version 2508 validated and in the process of deploying. We anticipate that our second build for version 2507 will be ready for final validation by our next scheduled update, after which we’ll deploy to fully remediate impact.”

While Microsoft has yet to disclose the number of customers and the regions impacted by this known issue, it has tagged it as an incident (OP1186186), a designation commonly used to describe a critical service issue typically involving noticeable user impact.

Microsoft is also working to address a separate issue (tracked as MO1176905) that affects a limited number of admins and users, preventing them from accessing multiple Microsoft 365 services.

As Redmond explains, this impacts only customers who have the Microsoft 365 Group SecurityEnabled set to false after it was changed to false as the default value following a recent misconfiguration.

Last week, it resolved a Microsoft Intune bug (IT1185063) that prevented some users from successfully enrolling new AOSP (Android Open Source Project) or Android Personal Work Profile devices.

In October, it also mitigated a DNS outage that impacted customers worldwide, preventing them from logging into company networks and accessing Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure services.
