Early impressions of the recent Red Dead Redemption update have been positive among PS5 and Xbox gamers. Still, Nintendo fans may be the most impacted, according to a performance review. SwitchCorner found that the resolution and frame rate boosts “transform” the Switch 2 game.

The new version is available as a free Switch 2 upgrade for owners of the Rockstar Games title. While the YouTube channel notes that the Switch port mostly met its 30 fps target, it still suffered occasional stutters. Now, the visuals are noticeably smoother after seeing that mark to 60 fps. Drops are also rare, even in the most detailed scenes.

Virtual gunslingers should appreciate the benefits of the performance gains. Aiming is much more responsive, making previously challenging missions less frustrating. Hand-to-hand combat is also less clunky, with punches landing when and where players expect.

Other ways Red Dead Redemption controls have improved

The free upgrade differentiates itself from the other consoles with mouse control. SwitchCorner admits that the input method is often awkward, but Red Dead Redemption is an exception. However, the lack of a gyro aiming option feels like a missed opportunity.

Switch 2 specs that support DLSS upscaling allow developers to add detail without compromises. The higher resolution refines building and terrain textures, which tended to blur together on the older handheld. Pop-in issues aren’t fully resolved, but objects in the distance now have more clarity.

The positive Red Dead Redemption Switch 2 upgrade has some fans wondering about the sequel. Rumors have swirled about a next-gen release for the PS5 and Xbox Series X to enhance performance. The situation is more desperate for Nintendo gamers, since the Rockstar Games project is not even available on the Switch. Now, it seems unlikely that the studio will make a Red Dead Redemption 2 announcement that would overshadow its predecessor.
