Aspyr has revealed that it was unable to deliver the promised Restored Content DLC for the Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 because it could not provide Disney with a complete list of the modders’ legal names.

As reported by Game File, Aspyr intended to bring the Restored Content DLC – content from an ambitious mod a group of volunteers had put together for PC players – when the game released in June 2022. Initially, Disney did sign off Aspyr working with “the modding community,” provided the latter could affirm it has “all the necessary rights.”

When KOTOR 2 released without the promised content, Aspyr claimed the missing content would be coming “soon” before finally admitting in June 2023 that the DLC would “not be moving forward.” This led to considerable player frustration, and Aspyr was sued for false advertising.

It’s through this lawsuit that correspondence between Aspyr, Lucasfilm, and the modders became public, revealing Disney was unwilling to credit “gamer aliases” rather than real names.

Despite liaising with the modding team, Aspyr was unable to secure permission from all 22 people involved in the modding project, without which Lucasfilm would not proceed.

“In our efforts to credit everyone who contributed to the mod, we have spooked Disney legal and now they have put a new blocker in place,” an Aspyr exec told two members of the modding team.

Shortly thereafter, Aspyr told fans it would “not be moving forward” with the project after a third-party – now thought to be Disney/Lucas lawyers – “objected.”

Lawyers for the gamers, Aspyr, and Lucasfilm Games reportedly agreed to an out-of-court settlement last month.
