Some fans had anticipated an update on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake at The Game Awards. Instead, viewers saw a trailer for a new experience loosely connected to the game. As it turns out, there may have been a good reason for the announcement to come without warning. With its studio forming in 2025, a Bloomberg insider doesn’t expect the Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic release date until 2030.

Jason Schreier took to Bluesky to comment on the new Star Wars game. While the news has been well received, his post may dampen enthusiasm somewhat. Arcanaut Studios joined forces with Lucasfilm Games only this year to start the project. Casey Hudson, who helped craft the original KOTOR is returning as game director. Despite his experience, Schreier thinks “2030 is an optimistic guess” for an arrival time.

Whether said in jest or not, the reporter poses the possibility that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will not be a PS6 title, but a PS7 game instead. Not surprisingly, impatient followers are not happy with the prediction.

Why are games taking so long to come out?

As budgets and expectations for AAA games have grown, development times have expanded with them. Even so, studios often rush to announce them at major events like The Game Awards. Motivations may include attracting investors or beating leakers to the punch. That frustrates gamers who often don’t see any gameplay for years. In the worst cases, studios collapse, or games suffer long delays or cancellations.

Star Wars games have not been immune to meeting an early demise. In one instance, the action-adventure Star Wars: 1313 never saw the light of day after Disney acquired Lucasfilm. More relevant to the latest title, a sequel, KOTOR 3 was shuttered in 2005 due to financial concerns.

Fans hope that the Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic release date arrives sooner rather than later. In the meantime, The Game Awards featured a trailer for Star Wars: Galactic Racer, due out in 2026. Amid some uncertainty, the KOTOR remake is also still in progress at Saber Interactive. However, the project has faced its own setbacks, with few positive signs since its debut at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase.
