OpenAI executive says ChatGPT will turn into an operating system

OpenAI exec highlight an OS-based future for ChatGPT

OpenAI seems to be exploring how ChatGPT could move beyond an app and toward an operating system. The direction suggests ChatGPT could become a central software layer for apps and services, rather than just another app you open and close. This ambition became clearer after OpenAI hired Glen Coates as its new Head of App Platform, to “help turn ChatGPT into an OS”.

Joined @OpenAI to head up App Platform and help turn ChatGPT into an OS. Last successful attempt was iOS ~20 years ago, so .. should be a cakewalk

Can’t wait to coding-demo-fail on a new stage

    — Glen Coates (@glencoates) December 15, 2025

The idea is not limited to one executive hire. Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Head of ChatGPT, has also been publicly focused on the same direction. Turley told TechCrunch that ChatGPT may one day operate more like an operating system.

“The evolution we’re trying to make over the next few years is one where ChatGPT itself is more like an operating system where you can come and use applications. If you want to write, there’s an app for that. If you want to code, there’s an app for that. If you want to interact with goods and services, there are applications for you,” he said.

How ChatGPT could become an operating system

The changes are already visible inside ChatGPT. The platform has moved beyond simple conversation into a front door for search, memory, and AI-driven actions. With the introduction of apps inside ChatGPT, third-party services can now run directly within the chatbot. Integrations for apps like Peloton, Tripadvisor, Canva, Spotify, etc. allow users to complete tasks without leaving the conversation. It shows how an app ecosystem could exist entirely inside ChatGPT.

An operating system typically acts as the connective layer between users, applications, and hardware. ChatGPT already handles much of the user-facing side of that equation, serving as the interface through which people search, ask questions, and complete tasks. However, deeper platform coordination and hardware integration are still missing pieces. This is where Coates’ background in building large-scale platforms matters.

The timing of Coates’ arrival also aligns with other long-term bets. OpenAI is working with Jony Ive on an AI-powered device that is expected to arrive in 2027, while continuing to expand partnerships with app makers such as Adobe, and Paypal.

Combined with its data center infrastructure and growing ecosystem, ChatGPT could one day become an AI operating system. There is still no timeline for when, or if, this will materialize, but the direction OpenAI is taking ChatGPT is becoming harder to ignore.

Microsoft makes theming your Windows 11 PC as easy as phones, but not as much fun

Windows 11 finally gets easier, with centralized theming, though the experience isn’t quite as playful as what you get on phones.

There’s a new Themes section in the Microsoft Store for Windows 11. It houses hundreds of curated themes, including wallpapers, theme colors, and other visual elements, that you can download and apply in a single click. The new Themes section aims to make personalization easier for users.

With users now accustomed to rich theming on smartphones and tablets, Microsoft had to address growing complaints that Windows PCs didn’t offer the same level of customization (with the same level of ease). The new Themes section contains over 400 themes, “over 35 of which are new to the store.”

I used Nano Banana Pro to create 20 social media posts, the response they got was shocking

Social media is a never-ending conveyor belt of content. Keeping up on trends, posting regularly, and offering insightful comments can lead to higher engagement but also serious burnout. I should know—I started my first Twitter account (now called X) way back in 2008. Amassing around 18,000 followers on X was the easy part. Keeping the flow of content was much harder, especially during a long period of time when I wrote two books.

I’ve struggled to create engaging content because it’s not my day job. I’ve been a journalist since 2001 and watched as the platforms germinated and grew. These days, LinkedIn is my platform of choice, mostly because it’s designed for working professionals. I still use X regularly, post a few times a week on Instagram and Facebook, and tend to experiment the most on the fringe apps Bluesky and Threads without taking them too seriously.

Google’s best Gemini AI feature could soon appear in your everyday apps

Deep Research goes beyond Google apps with the new Interactions API

Google just upgraded Gemini Deep Research, its most advanced AI research agent, and this time the upgrade is not limited to Google’s own products. Google says its AI capabilities can soon appear inside the everyday apps you already use. With the launch of the new Interactions API, Deep Research is no longer a Google-exclusive feature. It can now be built directly into third-party apps, opening the door for a wave of tools on your phone to quietly gain far more powerful AI.

Gemini Deep Research is built for long, complex tasks that many chatbots tend to struggle with. Instead of answering a single question, it works like a real researcher. It plans what information it needs, searches the web, reads through results, identifies gaps, and then continues searching until it builds a complete, well-sourced answer. It uses Gemini 3 Pro as its reasoning engine, which Google says is its most factual model yet, trained to reduce hallucinations during long, multi-step tasks.
