A new homebrew port of Super Mario 64 brings Nintendo’s classic platformer natively to the Sega Dreamcast, running at full speed in crisp 480p thanks to extensive decompilation and optimization work. Developed over several years by MrNeo, jnmartin84, and Falco Girgis, the project has impressed the retro-gaming community with performance and polish that rival, and in some respects surpass, the original Nintendo 64 release.

Super Mario 64 has been successfully ported to the Sega Dreamcast and is now available to download, thanks to decompilation efforts started by developer MrNeo in 2020, alongside help from Falco Girgis and developer jnmartin84.

This homebrew project has been garnering a lot of attention in the retro-gaming community. With Super Mario 64 finally ported to the Dreamcast, we’ve received a native port that’s remarkably optimized and polished.

Unlike emulators, which sometimes struggle with accuracy and speed, Super Mario 64’s decompilation port runs the original N64 game’s source code directly on the Dreamcast.

While MrNeo kicked off the project, developer jnmartin84, who has created ports of Mario Kart 64 and Doom 64 for the Dreamcast, stepped in to pick up where he left off. The outcome of this team effort is Super Mario 64 running at full speed at 480p, assembling a port that looks much more vibrant and sharper than the original Nintendo 64 version.

Falco_girgis took to social media and captured Super Mario 64 gameplay footage on his own Dreamcast and said:

The next Nintendo 64 classic has just hit the Sega Dreamcast, thanks, once again, to the efforts of jnmartin! Here’s over a minute of Super Mario 64 gameplay, captured directly from my DC!

As is usual with jnmartin’s work, the port plays like a AAA native release, with everything “SH4ZAMed” up, running at full speed, and looking as crisp and vibrant as ever on the Dreamcast’s sharp 480p video output!

The project started to pick up traction toward the end of 2025. The port received numerous updates and commits on GitHub, including splitting vertex processes to improve performance, reducing display list sizes, and cleaning up junk code to simplify the build.

Now, Super Mario 64’s Dreamcast port is finally available for download. Gamers looking to try out the game need to head over to the GitHub repository to download an automated builder that converts their legally owned US version of the Super Mario 64 ROM into a bootable Dreamcast image.

Retro gamers who’ve played the game on their Sega Dreamcasts have noticed that it runs better than the original Nintendo 64 version and feels like a true native AAA release.
