Tesla Malaysia unleases Model 3 Standard RWD and Model Y Long Range RWD

Tesla has officially expanded its Malaysian electric vehicle lineup today with the introduction of two new rear-wheel drive variants — the Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD and the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD — significantly broadening its reach across more price points and buyer profiles.

Headlining the announcement is the Model 3 Standard RWD, which is now listed at RM147,600 before options, making it the most affordable Tesla ever offered in Malaysia. The new entry-level variant undercuts the next step up, the Model 3 Premium RWD, by RM21,400, lowering the barrier of entry into Tesla ownership for Malaysian buyers.

Despite its lower price, the Model 3 Standard retains the core Tesla driving experience. It is powered by a single rear-mounted motor and offers a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 534 km, with a 0–100 km/h time of around 6.2 seconds. The refreshed exterior design and minimalist cabin remain intact, anchored by the familiar 15.4-inch central touchscreen, along with over-the-air software updates and access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

To achieve its more aggressive pricing, Tesla has trimmed several comfort, convenience and premium features compared to the higher-spec Model 3 variants. The Standard model drops the ambient interior lighting, uses a simplified seven-speaker audio system, and omits the FM radio tuner entirely. Upholstery and trim materials are less premium, while seat functionality has been pared back to heated front seats only, with ventilated seats and rear seat heating removed. Rear passengers also lose the dedicated rear touchscreen and powered air-vent controls, reverting to manual adjustment.

Additional cost-saving measures include a manually adjustable steering wheel, the removal of auto-dimming mirrors and the absence of a HEPA cabin air filtration system. Under the chassis, the Model 3 Standard switches to a simpler passive suspension setup in place of the more advanced frequency-dependent dampers used on pricier versions, while wheel choice is limited to the standard 18-inch wheels at launch.

Alongside the Model 3 Standard, Tesla has also confirmed the availability of the Model Y Long Range RWD in Malaysia, priced at RM216,450. Positioned between the base Model Y RWD and the Long Range AWD, this variant targets buyers seeking maximum driving range without the added cost or complexity of all-wheel drive.

The Model Y Long Range RWD uses a single rear motor paired with a larger battery pack, delivering a WLTP-rated range of up to 661 km, one of the longest ranges offered by Tesla locally. Despite prioritising efficiency, performance remains strong for an SUV, with a 0–100 km/h sprint time estimated at around 5.6 to 5.8 seconds.

Inside, the Model Y Long Range RWD maintains a more premium equipment level than the Model 3 Standard, featuring the updated 16-inch central touchscreen, optional rear passenger display, and Tesla’s familiar minimalist layout. Practicality remains a key strength, with over 2,100 litres of cargo capacity available with the rear seats folded, making it well-suited for families and long-distance use.

With the launch of both the Model 3 Standard RWD and Model Y Long Range RWD, Tesla is clearly sharpening its strategy in Malaysia by offering a wider spectrum of electric vehicles — from an aggressively priced entry sedan to a long-range, family-oriented SUV. While the lower-priced Model 3 comes with clear compromises in comfort and premium features, both models preserve Tesla’s defining strengths in software, charging infrastructure and electric performance, positioning the brand to compete more directly with an increasingly crowded EV market.
