Apple Unveils M5 Chip — A Major Leap in AI and Graphics for Mac, iPad, and Vision Pro

Apple today announced its latest silicon breakthrough, the Apple M5, a chip designed to usher in a new generation of on-device AI performance and graphics power. Built on third-generation 3nm technology, the M5 introduces a next-generation GPU architecture with Neural Accelerators embedded in every core, along with significant upgrades to the CPU, Neural Engine, and memory system, delivering over four times the peak GPU compute for AI compared to M4.

At the heart of M5 is a 10-core GPU, where each core integrates a dedicated Neural Accelerator. This architecture allows AI workloads such as inference, deep learning, and image processing to run directly on the GPU with remarkable efficiency. Apple claims M5 achieves over 30 to 45 percent higher graphics performance than M4 when handling shader workloads and ray tracing, while supporting third-generation ray tracing for richer, more realistic visuals.

The CPU also sees a major leap forward with up to ten cores — six efficiency cores and four performance cores — providing up to 15 percent faster multithreaded performance compared to M4. Complementing this is a faster 16-core Neural Engine designed for AI operations, which enhances both performance and energy efficiency across the system.

Another key advancement is the increase in unified memory bandwidth to 153GB/s, nearly 30 percent more than M4. This enables the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine to access a shared pool of memory simultaneously and at higher speeds, allowing users to run larger AI models, handle heavier creative workloads, and multitask between resource-intensive apps without lag.

The M5 chip will debut in the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro. For Apple Vision Pro, the new GPU enables rendering of 10 percent more pixels on its micro-OLED display, smoother refresh rates of up to 120Hz, and reduced motion blur — all crucial for more immersive, responsive spatial computing experiences.

According to Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, M5 represents “the next big leap in AI performance for Apple silicon.” He highlighted that the addition of Neural Accelerators to every GPU core, combined with the improved graphics, CPU, Neural Engine, and higher unified memory bandwidth, provides a major step forward for AI-driven workloads and creative performance.

The new GPU architecture is deeply optimized for AI and graphics. It enables developers to take advantage of enhanced performance automatically when using Apple’s frameworks and APIs such as Metal, Core ML, and Metal Performance Shaders. For advanced use cases, developers can also program the Neural Accelerators directly through Tensor APIs in Metal 4 to maximize GPU-based AI acceleration.

This tight integration allows MacBook Pro and iPad Pro to perform tasks like real-time image generation in apps such as Draw Things or local large language model processing using webAI with vastly improved speed. The faster Neural Engine also strengthens on-device AI features across Apple devices, including Apple Intelligence, improving the performance of creative tools like Image Playground and AI-assisted productivity features.

The M5’s expanded 32GB unified memory capacity enables users to run multiple demanding creative applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro side by side while simultaneously uploading large files to the cloud. The combination of powerful cores, unified memory, and energy efficiency ensures smoother performance for both AI and traditional workloads.

In addition to its performance gains, M5 continues Apple’s commitment to sustainability. Built with energy-efficient architecture and fabricated using 3nm technology, it allows the new MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro to meet stringent environmental standards while reducing overall power consumption throughout each product’s lifespan, supporting Apple’s 2030 carbon-neutral goal.

With M5, Apple pushes the limits of what’s possible in on-device AI and graphics computing. From faster generative image editing and local language model inference to ultra-realistic ray-traced graphics and high-fidelity video rendering, M5 delivers unmatched performance and efficiency. For users, this means faster, more responsive experiences across creative and productivity workflows. For developers, it means a powerful foundation to build the next generation of intelligent, GPU-accelerated applications.
