ASUS and Microsoft made a handheld Xbox console

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) has announced a groundbreaking new series of handheld gaming devices—the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X—developed in collaboration with Xbox. These next-generation handhelds are designed with improved ergonomics, powerful performance, and an immersive Xbox gaming experience, redefining the handheld gaming landscape.

According to Shawn Yen, Head of the Consumer Product Team at ASUS, “This revolutionary partnership with Microsoft allowed us to forge a brand new device with ROG muscle and the soul of Xbox.” The collaboration delivers an unprecedented fusion of PC and console gaming in a portable form.

The ROG Xbox Ally features the AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor, offering high power efficiency for on-the-go gaming. The higher-end ROG Xbox Ally X is equipped with the new AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor, delivering next-level performance for demanding AAA titles. Both models are scheduled to launch during the 2025 holiday season in select global markets.

    Redesigned for Comfort and Immersion

The new ROG Xbox Ally devices sport an all-new chassis with Xbox-inspired ergonomics. Designed for long gaming sessions, the devices feature enhanced palm rests, optimized grip textures, and on the Ally X model, impulse triggers for refined haptic feedback and improved immersion. These enhancements make the ROG Xbox Ally series the most comfortable and immersive handheld gaming devices ROG has ever produced.

    A Seamless Xbox Software Experience

ROG and Xbox have also enhanced the user interface for the new devices. While retaining Windows 11’s power and flexibility, the Xbox Ally series features a custom full-screen Xbox interface for instant access to games and settings. Navigation via joystick and buttons is smooth and intuitive, and the Xbox Game Bar provides quick access to performance and customization tools. Users also retain full access to third-party games and mods, merging console ease with PC versatility.

Roanne Sones, CVP at Xbox, commented, “We wanted to create an authentic Xbox experience in a handheld form factor. With ROG, we made it happen on the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.”

    Optimized Performance and Battery Life

With AMD’s latest processors, the ROG Xbox Ally series is built for power and efficiency. The Ally X, featuring the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor, delivers robust performance even in graphically intensive games. It includes an integrated NPU, preparing it for future AI-driven enhancements. Meanwhile, the standard ROG Xbox Ally balances strong gaming capabilities with power efficiency, using a 60Wh battery for extended playtime.

Both models support AMD’s advanced graphics technologies, including FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), and Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), ensuring smooth gameplay and optimized visuals.

    Availability

The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X will initially launch in over 30 markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, South Korea, and Australia, among others, with additional regions to follow.

With a combination of ROG’s engineering, AMD’s performance innovations, and Xbox’s software ecosystem, the ROG Xbox Ally series sets a new benchmark for handheld gaming.
