Battle of the compact powerhouses – Acer Predator Triton vs. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 & Razer Blade 14 – NotebookCheck.net News

Acer Predator Triton AI 14 (image source: Notebookcheck)

Acer’s Predator Triton AI 14 wants to compete with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and the Razer Blade 14. Our review of the Triton revealed some drawbacks, so can the overall package actually compete with the established rivals?

All three models use high-quality aluminum cases with subtle illumination elements. There are no problems in terms of build quality or stability and all of them offer a very high-end feeling. The maintenance options are limited to the SSD for all models, because the memory is soldered. All three models offer plenty of ports, but Asus and Razer are limited to USB 4.0, while the Acer also supports Thunderbolt 4. All three models also support card readers, but Acer only includes a very slow unit. At around 1.6 kg, both the Acer and the Razer are almost equal, while the RTX 5070 SKU of the Zephyrus G14 is around 100 grams lighter.

There are bigger differences in terms of input devices. The Zephyrus G14, for example, has the most comfortable keyboard followed by the Acer and then the Blade 14. However, the Acer is the only device with a haptic trackpad with support for an active stylus. The Triton is also the only device with a touchscreen (finger inputs only).

All three laptops are equipped with 14-inch OLED screens from Samsung and 2880 x 1800 pixels as well as a refresh rate of 120 Hz (Asus and Razer even use the identical panel). This also means the results for the brightness as well as the color gamut are virtually identical, including the comparatively low maximum HDR brightness. You can enjoy deep blacks, high contrast ratios, rich colors and very fast response times. The touch screen of the Acer, however, turns out to be a bit problematic, because there is a clearly visible grid effect especially on brighter images. This can be really annoying and it might also be a deal breaker for some potential buyers.

Both Asus and Razer use AMD processors and Asus takes the lead with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, but both models offer much more multi-core performance compared to the more efficient Intel Lunar lake processor in the Acer. In everyday situations, this does not really matter due to the good single-core performance, but the slower processor affects the gaming performance and you cannot utilize the full potential of the RTX 5070 Laptop.

All three models are available with the fastest version of the GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop (110-115W TGP). The raw GPU performance is therefore comparable. If you need even more GPU performance, you can also get the Asus with the faster RTX 5070 Ti or even the RTX 5080.

If you want to use the maximum performance of these 14-inch laptops, it will get loud. Asus and Razer reach up to ~55 dB(A) and the Acer is even louder at ~58 dB(A), so we recommend headphones for all three models when you want to play games.

In terms of speakers, the ROG Zephyrus G14 is a clear winner, which is also clearly audible in a direct comparison. The Blade 14 follows in second place and the Acer is last here. All three devices are pretty close to each other in our Wi-Fi test.

Acer’s Predator Triton 14 AI is the weakest overall package in our comparison. Especially the display is an issue, because the subjective picture quality suffers noticeably from the touch layer, yet at the same time it is the only model here with a touchscreen if you need it. Neither the Zephyrus G14, nor the Blade 14 offer a touchscreen, but the image quality is much better in return.

In terms of performance, the Acer is also beaten by its two rivals, which is primarily a result of the low multi-core performance from the Lunar Lake processor. This also affects the gaming performance in combination with the GeForce RTX 5070 slightly. Then there is the price, and the Acer is actually more expensive than the other two models. If you do not require a touchscreen or the haptic trackpad with stylus support, we do not see many reasons why you should choose the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI.
