Borderlands 4 dominated the US charts for September, helping drive a 10% growth in consumer spending to $4.8 billion alongside new releases and Switch 2 hardware sales.

The latest instalment in the franchise debuted at No.1 on Circana’s overall charts, and is already at No.3 for year-to-date sales (from January 5, 2025).

Borderlands 4 sold 30% higher than 2019’s Borderlands 3 according to Circana data, and has reached the highest launch month sales of any game in the franchise’s history.

The Gearbox Software title was also the first Borderlands game to debut as the overall best-selling game on the US charts during its release month.

Ghost of Yōtei also experienced a successful launch, having just met the data cutoff following its launch on October 2.

Sony’s first-party title, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, debuted at No.4 on the overall charts, and No.18 in terms of year-to-date sales.

It debuted at No.2 on the PlayStation charts, beaten by NBA 2K26 which launched on September 5.

NBA 2K26 launched at No.2 on the overall charts, and has become 2025’s best-selling game year-to-date, surpassing Monster Hunter: Wilds.

Overall, there were nine new titles on Circana’s September charts. Joining Borderlands 4, NBA 2K26, and Ghost of Yōtei in the Top Five was EA Sports FC 26 at No.3 and Madden NFL 26 at No.5.

Other new releases in the Top Ten were Silent Hill F (No.7), Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (No.8), and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (No.9).

There were three more new titles in the Top 20, including NHL 26 (No.12), Digimon Story: Time Stranger (No.13), and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (No.14).

Looking at mobile, data from Sensor Tower reports that seven titles maintained their spots in the Top Ten, with Gossip Harbour jumping three places to No.8, Royal Kingdom moving up to No.9, and Township settling in at No.10.

“Clash Royale maintained its 5th place spot showing 12% in-app purchase revenue month over month, and Kingshot maintained its 6th place spot, though it was flat month over month,” said Sam Aune of Sensor Tower.

“Clash Royale, Kingshot, and Royal Kingdom are all currently running aggressive UA campaigns.”

Elsewhere, content spending in the US increased 24% year-on-year to $324 million, compared to $261 million during the same period last year.

This growth was driven by a 32% growth in non-mobile subscription spending, a 12% rise in console content, and a 4% increase in mobile.

Hardware spending rose by 20% to $32 billion, with Nintendo Switch 2 coming out on top in both units and dollar sales. PlayStation ranked 2nd, followed by Xbox.

Here are the top 20 selling games from the period August 31 to October 4, 2025, data courtesy of Circana:
