Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 35 million copies to date

The game reached this milestone faster than The Witcher 3 and is currently CD Projekt’s “main source of revenue”.

Dystopian sci-fi blockbuster Cyberpunk 2077 has shifted over 35 million copies to date.

That’s according to developer and publisher CD Projekt, which pointed out that the game hit this sales milestone faster than its previous title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It has taken Cyberpunk 2077 five years to reach this feat, while The Witcher 3 sold over 30 million copies within six years.

Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski clarified that the figure reflects copies sold and does not include players from subscription services.

“This is not only a remarkable achievement for us, but also a powerful testament to the strength of the franchise and the effectiveness of our business strategy,” he told investors.

“We deliver high-quality, story-driven games that keep selling, supported by content updates that ensure our games continue to evolve and engage players for years.”

In a separate video to investors, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said that Cyberpunk is the company’s “main source of revenue”. Looking at CD Projekt’s financial results, Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion comprised 72.4% of the company’s total sales revenue for its third quarter.

The company also provided some colour on the eagerly-awaited Cyberpunk 2, which is being developed in Boston. The project now has over 80 staff on its development team, including devs who previously worked on franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, God of War, World of Warcraft and The Last of Us. Having established a senior team, CD Projekt is now looking to hire mid-level roles as pre-production continues. The Boston Cyberpunk team is expected to double in size within the next two years.

“Establishing the Boston-based Cyberpunk 2 enabled us to carry on with the development of two separate big AAA games at the same time,” Nowakowski said.

“Despite introducing some geographical and operational complexity, it brought in a wealth of multi-layered experience, skills, and backgrounds. We strongly believe that this investment will pay off in the future, bringing the next Cyberpunk experience to a new level.”

For its third quarter, CD Projekt made PLN349 million ($95.7 million) in sales revenue, a 53% increase year-on-year.
