Following numerous leaks over the past few weeks about Garmin’s supposed plans to launch several smartwatches with satellite connectivity, Garmin USA has now listed a Fenix 8 with “inReach technology”. While the description of the flagship smartwatch previously advertised options for an AMOLED display or solar cells, Garmin now describes the Fenix 8 as a multisport GPS smartwatch with options that include inReach technology for staying connected on the go.
The product page is yet to be updated, so Garmin has not yet revealed any further details about this new Fenix 8 model variant. Nevertheless, following the numerous rumors surrounding Garmin satellite smartwatches, this leak provides the first clue as to how they will be marketed, while confirming rumors that Garmin will require a paid subscription for satellite features, as is the case with inReach products.
Garmin is reportedly offering a “Get Fully Connected” all-in-one subscription that includes both LTE and satellite access. Due to the limited bandwidth, satellite access is primarily used to send and receive text messages, share locations and make emergency calls. Whether photos and voice messages can also be sent, or whether an LTE network is required for this, remains to be seen.
Users who don’t need an all-in-one subscription will also be able to purchase cheaper “Essential” and “Standard” subscriptions. While the prices for these new subscriptions are yet to be announced, Garmin estimates that the inReach Consumer Essential subscription, which currently costs $14.99 per month in the US, will cost €17.99 per month. This subscription includes unlimited emergency calls, 50 text messages, and 10 photo or audio messages per month.

I am particularly fascinated by how computer technology has fundamentally and dramatically reshaped human culture, and how it continues to do so.
