Brilliant as it may be, Sucker Punch’s new game, Ghost of Yotei, is causing PS5s to trip off in a rather bizzare manner. Here’s how it happens, and what to try out if you’re in a similar bind.

Sucker Punch Production’s much-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima was finally released last week. Like its predecessor, Ghost of Yotei has received rave reviews, but there appears to be a bit of a problem, too.

As shared on Reddit and X, Ghost of Yotei players appear to be facing an issue where the game randomly trips off during gameplay. It’s unclear if this issue is specific to the base model PS5, but at least one PS5 Pro owner has also confirmed random crashes. In most reported cases, playing Ghost of Yotei causes the console to spontaneously trip off, with the console also not coming back on until power is killed entirely, either at the switch or by taking out the power plug.

Ghost of Yōtei shutting my PS5 down after a few hours of play. Lots of Reddit users having the same issue. It’s not overheating, but the system seems to think so. Have to pull the power to get a reset.

    Anyone else?

I faced this exact issue on my base model PS5, so I can confirm that it is, in fact, a thing. In my case, it happened multiple times at the same spot about an hour into the game on the 1.008 patch. A clean reinstall and dropping my console’s resolution down to 1080p from the original 4K got me past that spot but my console eventually tripped off in the same manner regardless.

    Possible solutions?

Within the last 24 hours, Sucker Punch has quietly released a new update, V1.009, for the game. No patch notes have been published, however, so it’s unknown if this update fixes the issue. What appears to have fixed it on my end, however, was the thorough cleaning of my console’s fan and heatsink, as well as a system cache clean afterwards.

It’s likely this was caused by poor optimization, further exacerbated on consoles with sub-optimal cooling systems. Cleaning the fan of your console may or may not resolve the issue, but is ultimately worth a try.

Buy Ghost of Yotei on Amazon.
