GTA VI: all the news on Rockstar’s next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series

    • Grand Theft Auto VI launch delayed until November 2026

      Image: Rockstar Games

Grand Theft Auto VI is being delayed again: it will now launch on November 19th, 2026.

“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve,” Rockstar Games says. “We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern day Vice City.”

    • Rockstar claims fired employees were leaking company information.

The GTA VI studio now claims that firing dozens of employees last week for “gross misconduct” was because they were “found to be distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum.”

The president of the IWGB said to Bloomberg in response that Rockstar is “prioritizing union-busting by targeting the very people who make the game.” It’s planning a protest on Thursday morning.

    • GTA VI developer accused of union busting in mass firings

      Image: Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games, the developer of Grand Theft Auto VI, fired between 30 to 40 employees on Thursday, as previously reported by Bloomberg. According to the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), all of the employees fired were part of a private trade union Discord chat and were either already union members or attempting to organize a union at Rockstar.

“Rockstar has just carried out the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry,” IWGB president Alex Marshall said in a statement provided to The Verge.

    • Am I the only person that didn’t watch the GTA VI trailer?

Apparently, everyone else did. Rockstar Games claims the game’s second trailer racked up 475 million views in just 24 hours, making it “the biggest video launch of all time.” That’s more than the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer’s 365 million debut, and over double the 200 million views for The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ promo.

Despite all that demand, the now-delayed GTA VI is still a year away with its launch scheduled for May 2026.

    • Rockstar says new GTA VI trailer was ‘equal parts gameplay and cutscenes’

      Image: Rockstar Games

A second trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI had a surprise drop this week, and it looked like it mostly focused on the story and world at the expense of gameplay. However, developer Rockstar Games says that isn’t actually the case, and that the trailer was “comprised of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes.” The fact that it’s hard to discern between the two in the trailer is an impressive achievement for the game, though obviously we’ll have to reserve judgement until we are able to actually play it.

Here, you can judge for yourself:

    • Grand Theft Auto VI’s second trailer sets up its Bonnie and Clyde story

It’s been quite some time since Rockstar set the internet on fire with the first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer, and then subsequently delayed the game, but now we finally have a second look. The new trailer is — like the first — pretty heavily focused on setting up the characters and world, without much in the way of gameplay (though the developer does call it “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet”).

But we do have a few more details about the story. Here’s the description from Rockstar:

    • Let’s rewatch the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer

The delay of Grand Theft Auto VI into next year is a big deal. The game is the follow-up to arguably the biggest entertainment release of all time, one that originally debuted well over a decade ago. Even if GTAV is still going strong, now spanning multiple console generations and with a surprisingly enduring online component, the hype for its sequel has been steadily building since 2013. Adding to the sheer amount of time is the mystery — we still know very little about what GTAVI actually is. So it’s a good time to revisit what we do know; namely, the single trailer released in 2023.

Our first glimpse of the game runs almost entirely on vibes. Instead of gameplay or story, it covers a feeling, which is to say the feeling of Florida. GTAVI takes place in Leonida, Rockstar’s take on the Sunshine State, and the trailer is filled with those purple-pink skies, airboats plowing through the everglades, late-night streets races, a whole lot of pool parties, and of course alligators getting into mischief. Much of it is captured on a TikTok-like social network. There’s a slight introduction to the Bonnie and Clyde–style lead characters, including a woman named Lucia and her unnamed counterpart, but it’s not really clear what they’re up to (aside from the obvious crime).

    • Grand Theft Auto VI release delayed to May 2026

      Image: Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games is delaying the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26th, 2026. The game had originally been planned to release in fall 2025, but Rockstar Games now says the team needs extra time “to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

In a message posted on the Rockstar Games website, the development team apologized for the delay:

    • GTA V is Twitch’s most watched game of 2024

      Image: Getty

11 years after its launch, Grand Theft Auto V is still massively popular, becoming the most watched game on Twitch. The streaming platform has shared some of its viewership stats from last year with GTA V capturing over 1 billion hours watched.

Here’s an infographic breaking some of the stats down:

    • Rockstar’s working on bringing Roblox creators to GTA VI

      Image: Rockstar Games

With GTA VI looming over the fall 2025 release schedule, a new report from Digiday claims that Rockstar is going all-in on user-generated content. According to the report, the developer is having discussions with Fortnite, Roblox, and GTA creators about making “custom experiences” inside what’s shaping up to be the biggest gaming release since the last Grand Theft Auto game launched way (way) back in 2013.

That Rockstar has made user-generated content part of its strategy for GTA VI should come as no surprise. Despite the last GTA launching over ten years ago (same with GTA Online), interest in the game has stayed fresh with the help of mods like FiveM that allow users to host and join their own multiplayer servers.

    • GTA VI is still coming this fall.

Looking ahead, this calendar year is shaping up to be one of the strongest ever for Take-Two, as we plan to launch Sid Meier’s Civilization VII on February 11th, Mafia: The Old Country in the Summer, Grand Theft Auto VI in the Fall, and Borderlands 4.

Take-Two also revealed that the over-a-decade-old GTA V has sold more than 210 million copies globally.

    • Grand Theft Auto VI is launching in fall 2025

      Image: Rockstar Games

In Take-Two’s Q4 2024 earnings report, the company stated when gamers can expect the next entry in the GTA series. What was previously a nebulous calendar year 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI is now a more specific but still a bit vague “fall 2025.”

In other GTA-related news, the company reported that GTA V has sold 200 million copies: a staggering feat, making the game the second bestselling title of all time but still 100 million copies short of the number one entry, Minecraft.

    • It’s RTO for the GTA VI devs.

According to Bloomberg, Rockstar will ask employees to return to the office five days a week beginning in April. In an email sent to employees, Jenn Kolbe, head of publishing, wrote security and productivity were the main reasons for implementing RTO as well as the “tangible benefits” of in-office work.

    • GTA Online will no longer support Rockstar Editor on old-gen consoles.

With GTA VI expected to launch in 2025, it’s time to back up all your old car chase vids. Rockstar Editor on GTA Online will no longer support PlayStation 4 and Xbox One beginning on February 24, Rockstar Games announced. The clip editor will still exist for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.

Any existing clips will vanish by then, so players should make sure to export their work in the meantime.

    • Y’all really liked that trailer, huh?

The reveal of GTA VI was always going to be a moment. The events preceding the game’s initial reveal were, itself, a moment when the trailer got leaked, forcing Rockstar to release it earlier than intended.

In the 48-ish hours since then, the debut trailer for GTA VI has already eclipsed the first trailer of its predecessor, amassing more views in that short time than the GTA V trailer could get in 10 years.

      Damn.

    • Digital Foundry posted a nearly 37-minute analysis of the GTA VI trailer.

I expected nothing less, even though the actual trailer is only 90 seconds long. The trailer looks great, and good news: Digital Foundry is “inclined to believe” that the footage “is representative of the actual game,” Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter writes in a written analysis.

    • The GTA VI trailer is already breaking viewership records on YouTube.

Despite Rockstar releasing the GTA VI trailer early following a leak, it still managed to rake in 72 million views and counting. PC Gamer points out this makes it the most-viewed non-music video on YouTube in the 24 hours following its release — a record previously held by MrBeast.

It’s also getting close to dethroning BTS’s “Dynamite” music video, which currently holds the record for getting the most views on all of YouTube in 24 hours.

    • GTA VI isn’t launching on PC.

Unfortunately, the absence of PC isn’t too surprising, given that the PC version of GTA V was released more than a year and a half after the game first came out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Seems like we might be waiting awhile for GTA VI on PC, too.

    • The first GTA VI trailer is here

Less than a day before Rockstar was set to debut GTA VI’s first trailer, a now-suspended account posted the trailer on X (formerly Twitter). Though the GTA VI trailer was scheduled to premiere Tuesday, December 5th at 9AM ET, Rockstar quickly responded by publishing the trailer in full on its official YouTube channel.

The trailer confirms many little details that have slowly come out about GTA VI over the last two years, including the Vice City setting and that the game would star the series’s first female protagonist with Bonnie and Clyde-inspired story elements. The trailer says GTA VI is set for release in 2025, and in a press release published later on Monday, Rockstar specified that the game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X / S that year.

    • Grand Theft Auto VI’s first trailer will debut in December

      Image: Rockstar

It’s finally happening: Rockstar Games has officially revealed that the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto franchise will get a trailer next month. Likely to be called GTA VI, the new game is expected to feature the series’ first female protagonist, influenced by Bonnie and Clyde. GTA VI will also reportedly be set in a fictionalized version of Miami, just like 2002’s GTA: Vice City.

After reports of a GTA VI reveal this week, Rockstar Games took to X (formerly Twitter) today to officially announce that a trailer “for the next Grand Theft Auto” is coming in early December.

    • Rockstar confirms hack, says work on GTA VI will ‘continue as planned’

      Image: Rockstar

Rockstar has confirmed the Grand Theft Auto VI footage leaked online over the weekend was stolen from its network. The user who posted the gameplay, “teapotuberhacker,” claims they also carried out an attack on Uber that occurred last week, but it’s still unclear whether they’re actually connected.

“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,” Rockstar says on Twitter. “We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.”

    • GTA 6 gameplay leaks online in 90 videos

Footage of Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar’s next entry in its open-world franchise, has leaked online. PC Gamer reports that a user on the GTA Forums has posted a 3GB file full of 90 videos of GTA VI footage. It’s not exactly clear how the footage was obtained, but the “teapotuberhacker” poster claims to be behind the unrelated Uber hack late last week, and says they may “leak more data soon” including GTA V and GTA VI source code, assets, and testing builds.

The massive leak lines up with some earlier reporting on GTA VI, showing a female playable character in some clips. Bloomberg reported earlier this year that GTA VI would include a female protagonist influenced by Bonnie and Clyde. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier says he has verified the leak is real through sources at Rockstar Games.
