Harlan Coben says this brutal Netflix thriller is the perfect double bill with Lazarus on Prime Video

Just like that, all six episodes of Harlan Coben’s Lazarus have hit Prime Video and been binged. My head is still spinning from the never-ending twists and turns the hit novelist has thrown our way, and it’s the first time this year I’ve not been able to guess what happens next in a TV show.

But really, Lazarus is just the start of streamable Coben content if you’re not familiar with him. Prime Video is already home to Shelter, but it’s Netflix that is the treasure trove of book-to-screen adaptations. Fool Me Once, Missing You and Stay Close are just some of unmissable series on the streamer, but that’s not the one you should binge next.

In fact, to help me curate the perfect double bill, I asked Coben himself what fans should stream straight after Lazarus. His answer? A disturbing show that flew so under the radar, I’m shocked that more people haven’t seen it.

Harlan Coben thinks you should stream The Stranger on Netflix after Lazarus

“They’re all our children. They all drive us nuts choosing between our children,” Coben tells me. “But I think The Stranger.”

Co-creator Daniel Brocklehurst agrees, “It has a slightly uncomfortable element to it, about this stranger hearing and dropping truth bombs in people’s laps.”

First airing on Netflix in 2020 after being adapted from Coben’s novel of the same name, The Stranger does exactly what Brocklehurst says. Adam Price is a man who has the white-picket fence dream down to a tee, so when he meets The Stranger, he learns a devastating secret about his wife that changes the course of his life.

Pair the sharing of family secrets with Laz (Sam Claflin) learning about Dr. L’s (Bill Nighy) real past over the course of Lazarus, and you can see where the similarities lie.

However, as producer Nicola Schindler points out, Lazarus is very much its own production. Not only is it based on an original script rather than a book adaptation, but it’s the furthest Coben and his team have veered into supernatural territory.

“Lazarus is really distinctive, and I think that’s really important,” she adds. “The others are similar, but this feels like it’s in its own world. It’s got its own tone, and it’s got its own way of telling stories.” I’ll say.
