HP OmniBook 5 16 vs. Dell 16 Plus: Lunar Lake-V makes all the difference – NotebookCheck.net News

The Arrow Lake-U CPU in the the OmniBook 5 16 really drags down the system when compared to the Dell 16 Plus (Image source: HP)

For just $50 more, the Dell 16 Plus offers significantly faster graphics and NPU performance than the HP without requiring additional power.

The HP OmniBook 5 16 and Dell 16 Plus are each on sale for around $650 to $700 sporting Intel Arrow Lake-U Core Ultra 7 255U and Lunar Lake-V Core Ultra 7 256V processors, respectively. Both are budget to low midrange general purpose multimedia laptops for moderate multitasking or home streaming scenarios. If we could choose over the other, however, the HP loses a lot of steam.

If performance is of utmost importance, then the Dell 16 Plus takes the lead without question. Its Core Ultra 7 256V CPU runs roughly 10 percent faster than the Core Ultra 7 255U in the HP when it comes to multi-threaded performance and up to 90 percent faster when it comes to gaming or integrated graphics performance as shown by the comparison graphs below. The latter is particularly noteworthy as users might anticipate the Dell 16 Plus consuming much more power in the process, but in reality both systems run comfortably at around 40 W each when under load for a significant performance-per-watt advantage in favor of Dell.

The differences don’t end there, either. The integrated NPU in the Core Ultra 7 256V peaks at 47 TOPS compared to only 12 TOPS on the Core Ultra 7 255U for faster AI-accelerated tasks. Co-Pilot+ is therefore better optimized for the Dell system than on the HP.

There are many other differences beyond simply the CPU as well including their displays. Check out our full reviews on the Dell 16 Plus and HP OmniBook 5 16 for more details and comparisons.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There’s a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s. When I’m not managing day-to-day activities and US review articles on Notebookcheck, you can catch me following the eSports scene and the latest gaming news.
