A redesigned version of the Fitbit app appears to be on the way. Recent reports suggest that users could receive a new tab structure in a future update. Plus, code behind the latest release from the brand indicates that two new sleep-related metrics are also in development.

A major update appears to be on the way for the Fitbit app. Two new sleep-related metrics and a redesign of the tab structure were recently spotted in the code behind the Fitbit app version 4.60, which arrived in early January 2026.

As reported by Gadgets and Wearables, Fitbit wearable users could get additional sleep metrics in a future update. Users of wearables like the Fitbit Charge 6 (curr. $99.95 at Amazon) can already track their sleep duration, stages and schedule, alongside a calculated Sleep score. Now, it seems that a new Sleep Need feature is in the works. Strings in the code indicate that this calculated metric will come with “a detailed breakdown to explain how your sleep need was calculated”.

The second upcoming sleep metric is Sleep Debt. The Fitbit app’s code includes messages such as “Less than usual may mean you’ve built up some ‘sleep debt’, and you may want to take it easy”, indicating that this score will give users insight into their current energy levels based on their recorded sleep. Both of these features were beta tested in the Fitbit Personalized Sleep Schedule Lab last year.

On top of this, the tab structure of the app could be updated. Currently, the app has three tabs: Today, Coach and You. This layout arrived in an August 2023 redesign of the app. According to another report by Gadgets and Wearables, there is evidence in the app’s code that dedicated Fitness and Sleep tabs could be reintroduced. As a reminder, before the 2023 update, there were four tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health. Exactly how these tabs could be organised in the future is unclear. Further evidence that points to an upcoming design overhaul includes onboarding messages like “Ready to explore your new redesigned app?”.

It is unclear when Fitbit will roll out this new version of its app for iOS and Android users. The change log for version 4.60 for iOS and Android simply stated that it brought “bug fixes and performance improvements”.
