As the Northern Hemisphere enters the warmest summer months, there is more focus on the cooling performance of the Switch 2. Although reports of bricked consoles are rare, some gamers describe their handhelds as excessively hot and noisy. A Nintendo Soup article highlights how Japanese gamers have complained about the issue. However, the Switch 2 overheating is also a worry for users in other regions.

Boosted Switch 2 specs enable compatibility with demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077. With support for enhanced frame rates and higher resolutions, the system is likely to generate more heat than its predecessor. Yet, some Switch and Switch 2 games with less impressive visuals are taxing the handheld. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does not yet have an Upgrade Pack. Even so, one Reddit poster revealed how it caused the console to shut down after two hours.

The Switch 2 dock may also be contributing to toasty consoles. While the accessory features a built-in fan, its purpose is not to cool the handheld itself. With many owners using the dock for 4K gameplay at high refresh rates, it also heats up quickly. Some Nintendo fans speculate that the dock blocks some of the console’s ventilation, leading to the Switch 2 overheating. Even downloading files through its Ethernet port seems to stress the dock, making it loud enough to notice in adjacent rooms.

Nintendo’s new console also has an internal fan to prevent throttled performance or shutdowns in warm conditions. When in handheld mode, gamers have noted that a hot-to-the-touch console may display a warning message. To accelerate the cooling process, the Switch 2 will enter sleep mode. Gamers should also disconnect the console or dock from any AC adapter and place it in a cooler environment.

There is always a risk that high temperatures can damage a gaming handheld. Still, while most original Switch owners find the new system runs warmer, Nintendo has downplayed these concerns.
