DJI is expected to present the Osmo Pocket 4 soon. In the meantime, OmniVision has now presented the OV50R40 specifically for high-end ‘action, vlog and pocket cameras’. Apparently, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi are also on board to use OmniVision’s new 50 MP and 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor.

It seems that OmniVision has announced the camera sensor that could underpin DJI’s next Pocket-branded action camera. To recap, Digital Chat Station indicated at the end of September that OmniVision was currently in the ‘project evaluation phase’ regarding a sensor that could match the imaging of devices like DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 (curr. $618 on Amazon).

Meanwhile, other sources inferred that this mysterious sensor would feature in future flagship smartphones produced by Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi. Now, OmniVision has presented the OV50R40, a 50 MP and and 1/1.3-inch sensor designed for:

…high-end consumer devices including smartphones, as well as action, vlog and pocket cameras.

The OV50R40 also boasts 110 dB Single Exposure HDR, in-sensor zoom cropping and can capture 8K video. Previously, the Osmo Pocket 4 had been rumoured to adopt a new 1-inch type CMOS sensor, as well as a secondary camera to help distinguish it from its predecessor. Potentially, both of these could be true, with the OV50R40 taking the form of the Osmo Pocket 4’s secondary camera. It remains to be seen in what capacity Android OEMs will use OmniVision’s new 50 MP sensor, though.
