New major update makes Logitech’s PlayStation Portal alternative worth buying now that it’s on sale – NotebookCheck.net News

A combination of a new update and a limited-time discount makes the Logitech G Cloud, pictured here, worth buying now (Image source: Logitech)

The Logitech G Cloud is nearing its third year anniversary, and a major update has made the cloud streaming handheld a much better device than it was at launch. Combine that with a discount on Amazon, and the G Cloud is worth considering.

The Logitech G Cloud launched a few years ago but has since been overshadowed by handhelds such as the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go. Although it isn’t a traditional game console as it doesn’t run games natively (save for Android games) as its main job is for cloud gaming. While it did get knocked for its features and price at launch, a combination of a recent major update and a limited-time price cut makes it worth buying now.

Starting first with the update, the Logitech G Cloud received a major software upgrade in late June that many users say has greatly enhanced the experience. The new update bumps the software to version 10, and among the features it brings is a revamped user interface (UI).

The new UI is described as being akin to what you see when you boot up a Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch rather than the Android-like launcher it previously had. With the new update, the Logitech G Cloud boots into a redesigned dynamic home screen that has its background change based on the game or app that is currently highlighted.

The new update also allows users to pin their favorite games and apps to the home screen, thus eliminating the need to scroll through apps and games’ lists to find a game. Another new feature the update brings is the Blacknut Cloud Gaming app which is an alternative to Xbox Game Pass for game streaming.

There’s also an exploration area that shows a list of recommended games curated by Xbox and Logitech, allowing users to find new and interesting games. One user has also reported that the version 10 update allows the G Cloud to work better with XR glasses like the Xreal One Pro AR and Viture Pro XR glasses.

With the update out of the way, it’s time to focus on the deal. At launch, the Logitech G Cloud cost $349.99. However, it received a price cut that brought it down to $299.99. Now, you can get it on Amazon for $259.34, 14% off its list price. While that is more than the $199 PlayStation Portal, the Logitech G Cloud is a more versatile device which sort of justifies its higher price.

Unlike the PS Portal that is limited to playing PlayStation games via the owner’s PS5 console or PlayStation Plus Premium game catalog, the Logitech G Cloud supports Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, GeForce Now, the recently added Blacknut, and even PS Remote Play. It also has Moonlight pre-installed, so users can stream games from their PCs. Let’s not also forget that it works with XR glasses and can be connected to a TV unlike the PS Portal. It also has a battery life of up to 12 hours whereas the PS Portal has a battery life of between 7 to 9 hours.
