Nintendo has released its financial results for the full year, reporting a decline in net sales and profits as it prepares for the release of the Switch 2 next month.

As part of its results, Nintendo revealed its sales forecast for the upcoming console. It expects hardware sales of 15 million units with software sales expected to be 45 million.

So far, 2.2 million people have applied for pre-orders of the Switch 2 in Japan.

In 2018, Nintendo predicted the Switch would move 10 million units, whereas software sales were projected to be 35 million.

With the release of the Switch 2 set to dominate Nintendo’s next fiscal year, the company has predicted a 63% rise in net sales for the twelve months ended March 31, 2026.

Here’s what you need to know:

    The numbers

For the full year ended March 31, 2025

    • Net sales: ¥1.2 trillion ($8.3 billion,down 30.3%)
    • Operating profit: ¥282.5 billion ($1.9 billion, down 46.6%)
    • Ordinary profit: ¥372.3 billion ($2.5 billion, down 45.3%)
    • Gross profit: ¥710.1 billion ($4.9 billion, down 25.5%)

    Forecast for the full year

    • Net sales: ¥1.9 trillion ($13.1 billion, up 63.1%)
    • Operating profit: ¥320 billion ($2.2 billion, up 13.3%)
    • Ordinary profit: ¥380 billion ($2.6 billion, up 2.1%)

    The highlights

Nintendo experienced a 30.3% drop on its dedicated platforms to ¥1.6 trillion ($11 billion), which includes hardware, software, and accessories.

Looking at hardware specifically, the Nintendo Switch sold 3 million units, down 22.4% compared to 3.86 million last year.

The OLED model once again led the charge in sales, with 5.96 million units moved. However, this was a 37.2% decline compared to the 9.32 million sold during FY24.

The lowest selling model was the Switch Lite, which moved 1.95 million units. This marked a 22.7% decline from the 2.53 million sold last year.

As for software, 155 million Switch games were sold during the financial year, down 22% compared to the nearly 200 million units sold during the previous fiscal year.

Taking a look at the previous quarter – the three months ended March 31, 2025 – Nintendo sold 1.27 million Switch consoles (down from 1.96 million units) and 31.43 million games (down from 35.72 million).

There were 24 new releases over the course of the fiscal year – 15 of those were first-party titles. Upcoming first-party games for the Switch include Pokémon Legends and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Super Mario Party Jamboree sold the most at 7.48 million units, followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 6.23 million and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom at 4.09 million.

Nintendo’s most recent releases sold over one million copies, with January’s Donkey Kong Country Returns HD at 1 million and November’s Mario & Luigi Brothership at 1.6 million.

Looking at Nintendo’s digital sales, it reported a 26.5% drop to ¥326 billion ($2.2 billion). The majority of digital revenue came from download-only software, add-on content, and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions.

As for its mobile and IP-related sales, this segment also experienced a decline of 27% to ¥67.6 billion ($468 million).

However, Nintendo highlighted its upcoming initiatives to “expand the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP” including the opening of Nintendo San Francisco and Super Nintendo World at Universal Epic Universe in Orlando this month.

It also highlighted the March 26, 2027 release date of the live action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, in addition to the Nintendo Today smart app.

Looking ahead, Nintendo has forecasted 4.5 million sales for hardware (down 58.3%) and 105 million software sales (down 32.4%) for FY26.
