OpenAI’s ChatGPT ad costs are on par with live NFL broadcasts
OpenAI plans to begin rolling out ads on ChatGPT in the United States if you have a free or $8 Go subscription, but the catch is that the ads could be very expensive for advertisers.
OpenAI has not publicly commented on how much it would cost to pay for an ad within the AI answers.
At the moment, we know that ChatGPT ads appear under the answers, and OpenAI has clarified that it won’t use your personal information, including health data, to train its models for ads.
OpenAI also confirmed that ads won’t influence answers
How much are these ads going to cost for advertisers?
OpenAI won’t tell us the specifics, but a new report from The Information tells us a bit more about the rate the Microsoft-backed startup is mulling internally.
OpenAI plans to charge up to $60 per 1,000 views for ChatGPT ads, which is on par with live NFL broadcasts.
However, OpenAI won’t share how many clicks ads are generating.
That makes sense because ChatGPT also doesn’t tell us how many clicks it sends to publishers it scrapes for model training, but it’s likely very low, far below the click-through rate on Google.
The very low CTR likely explains why OpenAI does not want to employ a CPC model. Instead, it’s opting for $60 per 1,000 views instead.
“OpenAI has told early advertisers that it will give them data about impressions, or how many views an ad gets, as well as how many total clicks it gets,” a media buyer working with some of the advertisers said. “Advertisers will get high-level insights like total ad views,” an OpenAI spokesperson told The Information. “That’s similar to what TV networks offer.”
ChatGPT ads will begin showing up out in the coming weeks, and if you don’t want to see ads, you need to subscribe to $20 GPT Plus.
