OpenSignal: unifi Leads Malaysia’s Mobile Speed Rankings as 5G Competition Intensifies

OpenSignal has released its latest Malaysia Mobile Network Experience Report – November 2025, revealing a highly competitive landscape as operators continue to strengthen their 4G and 5G infrastructure nationwide. The report, based on data collected between 1 August and 29 October 2025, highlights notable shifts in performance across speed, reliability and 5G availability.

In overall download speed, which measures performance across 3G, 4G and 5G, unifi took the top spot with an average of 76.6 Mbps, ahead of U Mobile at 67.6 Mbps and Maxis at 64.9 Mbps. CelcomDigi recorded 61.0 Mbps while Yes 5G scored 50.2 Mbps. The ranking marks a significant milestone for unifi, reflecting the operator’s expanding mobile footprint and continued investment in network modernisation.

The 5G race, however, remains extremely tight. unifi once again led with 229.5 Mbps in 5G download speed, followed closely by U Mobile at 226.6 Mbps and Yes 5G at 222.5 Mbps. Maxis registered 212.0 Mbps, while CelcomDigi posted 183.9 Mbps. These figures reaffirm Malaysia’s strong momentum in 5G speed improvements, with all operators delivering consistently high numbers well above global averages.

When measuring how often users stay connected to 5G, U Mobile emerged as the top performer with 57.8% 5G availability, followed by Maxis at 52.0% and Yes 5G at 49.4%. unifi and CelcomDigi trailed slightly at 48.5% and 47.8% respectively. Despite CelcomDigi’s extensive coverage footprint, its 5G availability remains comparatively lower, indicating further room for optimisation as the operator transitions users onto newer 5G layers.

In Consistent Quality—which reflects day-to-day reliability across streaming, video calls, browsing and social apps—CelcomDigi claimed the lead with 71.7%, followed by Maxis at 67.3% and unifi at 63.5%. U Mobile scored 61.5%, while Yes 5G recorded 48.2%. For users seeking stability and smooth performance across everyday tasks, CelcomDigi and Maxis continue to offer the strongest experiences.

OpenSignal’s Reliability Experience metric, rated on a 100–1000 scale, placed Maxis in first position with 874 points, closely followed by CelcomDigi (869) and unifi (867). U Mobile (784) and Yes 5G (783) rounded out the list. These results highlight Maxis’ continued strength in delivering dependable connectivity, particularly in urban and suburban areas where network demand is heavy.

In terms of Coverage Experience, CelcomDigi remained ahead with 8.5 points, reflecting its widespread national footprint. Maxis followed at 6.9 points, with U Mobile at 5.5, unifi at 4.2 and Yes 5G at 3.9. Despite strong coverage metrics, the report notes that broad coverage does not automatically translate to high 5G availability—a gap still seen among some operators undergoing network consolidation or spectrum refarming.

OpenSignal’s latest findings underscore Malaysia’s accelerating progress in mobile connectivity as operators continue to compete aggressively in the 5G era. With major investments underway across spectrum, densification and standalone 5G upgrades, consumers can expect further improvements in speed, coverage, and reliability over the coming year.
