Retro dlassic Sabre Wulf gets a stunning Commodore 64 remaster from Genesis Project team – NotebookCheck.net News

The Genesis Project Team is delivering a meticulous Commodore 64 remaster of the 1984 cult classic Sabre Wulf, featuring completely redrawn 320×200 pixel art, smoother code, bug fixes, and a refreshed soundtrack that finally taps the system’s full audiovisual potential. With added quality-of-life features such as a “fog of war” map, enhanced UI, and expanded enemy variety, the project is nearing completion, and an early v0.5 build is already available for download.

If you recently bought the new Commodore 64: Ultimate, then you’ll be pleased to know that modders are taking remasters of classic titles on other platforms like the ZX Spectrum into their own hands. The long-awaited overhaul of Sabre Wulf for the Commodore 64 is currently steadily taking shape under the talented hands of the Genesis Project Team.

The new pixel art has been meticulously crafted by Jon Eggleton, who has managed to imbue new life into the game’s 256-screen jungle, using a plethora of multi-color tilesets, while also bumping the resolution up to 320×200 pixels compared to the original title’s 256×176 resolution.

Robert Troughton rewrote the game’s code to ensure characters move smoothly on-screen while keeping up with the higher refresh rate.

He also took the liberty of eliminating bugs from the original, such as screen-transition quirks. The music is by Marcin Majdzik, along with new loading screens and cinematics, to add some modern flair while preserving the game’s original charm.

What sets this remaster apart from the original Commodore 64 port is that it makes use of the Commodore 64’s untapped potential. The original C64 port welcomed the ZX Spectrum’s visuals but suffered from a duller color palette. However, the Sabre Wulf remaster fixes this issue with vibrant visuals.

Further quality-of-life and content add-ons include a new “fog of war” map, a richer user interface, and a wider variety of enemies.

Sabre Wulf was initially released in 1984 by British developer Ultimate Play the Game for numerous platforms, including the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, and the Amstrad CPC.

At the time, Sabre Wulf was a cult-classic hit where players would step into the shoes of Sabreman and guide him through a vibrant maze of jungles to collect treasures stolen by the blue Wolf.

The latest preview indicates that Sabre Wulf’s Commodore 64 remaster is nearing completion. However, the team hasn’t announced an exact release date. For those of you eager to try out Sabre Wulf Remastered, you can download v0.5 right here.
