Roblox to introduce new “Sensitive Issues” content descriptor

Experiences with this tag will be inaccessible to under 13s without parental permission

Roblox has announced it will roll out a new “Sensitive Issues” content tag to experiences that are “primarily themed on a sensitive social, political, or religious issue.”

The company announced the new descriptor in a Creator Hub post on August 4 (via Game Developer), where it emphasised its introduction is “not intended to take a stance on any of these issues” but to “give parents additional tools to shape their child’s experience on Roblox.”

The new content descriptor will roll out to the platform on August 11. After this date, experiences with the tag will be inaccessible to Roblox players under 13, with parents then able to choose whether to allow their child to access them or not.

“Our goal is to help parents decide what content is right for their family, especially for subjects that may require adult guidance,” the post says.

So what are the criteria for the Sensitive Issues tag? Roblox defines “sensitive issues” as “any current sensitive social, political, or religious issue” that has both “polarized viewpoints” (a limited number of strongly opposing viewpoints) and evokes a “strong emotional response” or passionate debate.

“Issues such as immigration, capital punishment, gun control, marriage equality, pay equity in sports, prayer in schools, racial profiling, affirmative action, vaccination policies, and reproductive rights,” are just some of the examples Roblox gives.

But the company stresses that this is “not a comprehensive or finite list,” and that “topics that are frequently in the news and inspire strong opinions and emotional debate” fall under this category.

Once this new parental control has been implemented, Roblox creators will be required to fill out an additional question in the Maturity & Compliance Questionnaire (found under their creation’s Audience tab) about their experience and whether it includes any of the above.

If a creator’s experience is identified as being “primarily themed on a sensitive issue,” it will receive the new descriptor and be made unavailable to under-13s by default. It will not be removed or suspended unless creators provide inaccurate information, in which case, they could face consequences.

Roblox encourages creators to fill out or update their questionnaire by September 29, 2025, if their experience includes any of the sensitive issues the company has named. If an experience is then deemed by Roblox to be focused

“Experiences that only include singular assets or elements related to these issues would not meet the criteria for the descriptor,” Roblox explained in the post. “The experience must be primarily ‘about’ these issues, and most experiences today will not see any change to their experiences’ descriptors.”

Roblox has also confirmed that the new tag will not change the existing content maturity label of any experiences.

“We’re not taking a stance on whether these issues are inherently inappropriate for children,” Roblox continued. “Instead, we recognize that topics like social, political, and religious issues can be handled in a way that is developmentally appropriate.

“However, as an online platform with a vast amount of user-generated content, we can’t always guarantee that this will be the case.”

Roblox has gradually been updating and adding new safety and parental tools, following concerns over the content children are exposed to on the platform. In June, the company announced new moderation policies and actions to provide more “accurate information to users, parents, and regulators,” and earlier this week, it revealed its new AI tool that aims to “detect early signals of potential child endangerment.”
