Rovio lays off 36 workers following underperformance of Angry Birds Dream Blast

Firm to also undergo changes in management structure as part of continued integration into Sega

Rovio has announced layoffs affecting 36 employees in response to Angry Birds Dream Blast underperforming.

As Mobilegamer.biz reports, the developer confirmed it will also implement studio and management restructuring as a result.

“We have been renewing our organisation this autumn in reaction to one of our games underperforming and in order to better respond to the market, to move towards a more game-centric approach, and to be able to iterate fast on new game ideas,” a spokesperson said.

“We are creating new business units, reorganising some of our game studios and reallocating some of the games developed in them.”

This includes changes to its studios, with its Finnish location focusing on fewer titles “as some of their games become an independent business unit,” while its Barcelona studio will be working on more new and existing projects.

“We are also making some changes in our management structure to reflect our role as a non-listed company, as well as tightening our relations with SEGA,” the spokesperson continued.

“With this our CEO Alexandre Pelletier-Normand is spending more time around our different Rovio locations and at the Sega of Europe office.”

They concluded: “These changes resulted in changes in some roles, the creation of several new roles and a total of 36 employees being made redundant.”

Sega announced it would acquire Rovio in a €706 billion deal in April 2023. This was finalised later that August.
