Steam launch: New free-to-play idle clicker game hits Steam, faces immediate backlash over artwork – NotebookCheck.net News

Galaxy Idle Clicker showed a lot of promise in early access, but its recent reviews have more than just questionable. (Image source: Steam – Edited)

Galaxy Idle Clicker is a new free-to-play launch on Steam, with a space-themed idle clicker experience and over 4,000 areas to explore. It lets you make strategic upgrades and has a solid offline progression.

In case you were unfamiliar with the genre, idle clickers (also known as incremental games) let players perform simple actions – like clicking or tapping – to earn resources. Over time, these resources can be used to unlock upgrades or automate processes, which means you can progress even when the game isn’t actively being played. This genre is usually popular because of its addictive progression loops and satisfying sense of growth.

A new game in this space, Galaxy Idle Clicker, has officially launched on Steam. Released on August 7, 2025, by developer Soehnle and publisher TimeLost Gaming, the game has idle mechanics, space exploration, and a host of unlockable upgrades. Prior to its full release, the game underwent an early access phase starting on July 18, 2024, so that players can experience and provide feedback on its evolving features.

In Galaxy Idle Clicker, players can upgrade their spaceship to explore five vast universes, each containing multiple galaxies, solar systems, and planets. The game features over 4,300 areas to conquer, filled with enemy ships to defeat, resources to collect, and prisoners to rescue. Players can engage in four unique reset systems and three mini-games. The game also supports offline farming.

Since its early access launch, Galaxy Idle Clicker has seen a steady increase in player engagement. As of the latest data, the game boasts an all-time peak of 2,131 concurrent players and is maintaining an average of over 900 active players in the past 30 days. The game has also garnered a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, with 70% of 762 user reviews being favorable. However, recent reviews have flipped the table towards ‘Mostly Negative’, with 68% of the last 70 reviews not in favor. New backlash over a controversial art style change – reportedly using AI-generated assets – is hurting the game’s player base. Players with thousands of hours invested have voiced frustration over what they see as a downgrade, particularly those who paid for cosmetics now altered.

Furthermore, Galaxy Idle Clicker is entering a pretty competitive market populated by titles like Cookie Clicker, AdVenture Capitalist, and Clicker Heroes. However, the fact that the game is free-to-play (with optional in-app purchases) should work in its favor. Also, the game supports controllers as well, so you can kick back and relax while you play it.

Galaxy Idle Clicker‘s gameplay is linked below, and you can learn more via the Steam store game page here.
