Steven Soderbergh says that mid-budget movies underperforming at the box office is ‘not a good thing for movies’

After Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag underperformed at the domestic box office despite a strong critical response, the director reflected on the movie’s public reception. In speaking with The Independent, Soderbergh said that the muted reception for his movie is a bad omen for Hollywood more generally.
“This is the kind of film I made my career on,” he said. “And if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age of 25 years old to come out to theaters — if that’s truly a dead zone — then that’s not a good thing for movies. What’s gonna happen to the person behind me who wants to make this kind of film?”
“I know for a fact, having talked to somebody who works at another studio, that the Monday after Black Bag opened, the conversation in the morning meeting was: ‘What does this mean when you can’t get a movie like this to perform?’ And that’s frustrating,” he continued.
Black Bag stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as two British spies who begin to do some clandestine work on one another. The movie was released by Focus Features, and Soderbergh said that the studio told him the movie will turn a profit.
Still, “the bottom line is that we need to figure out a way to cultivate this audience for movies that are in this mid-range, that aren’t fantasy spectacles or low-budget horror movies,” the director said. “They’re movies for grown-ups, and those can’t just go away.”
Soderbergh added that many of his most famous movies might not get made today: “Erin Brockovich wouldn’t get made today; Traffic wouldn’t get made. Unless you get Timothée Chalamet who, god bless him, seems to be interested in doing different kinds of movies. But that window is getting smaller and smaller for filmmakers to climb through.”

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (April 18 – 20)
Given the success of A Minecraft Movie in theaters, our first instinct for this week’s update was to suggest some great Jack Black movies on Hulu. Unfortunately, there aren’t any great Jack Black movies on Hulu. Year One and Gulliver’s Travels are far from his best work. But while we can’t recommend any of Black’s films on Hulu right now, there are three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.
The first is a terrific crime thriller that flew way under the radar last year. Our second pick of the week features Jude Law in a different kind of thriller that dramatizes some dangerous events from the early ’80s. And our final pick of the week features an engaging romance between two of the most recognizable TV stars of their era. It’s an onscreen pairing that works surprisingly well.
3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (April 18-20)
When one hit show ends, another one begins. That’s HBO’s superpower — the network releases nearly every water-cooler TV show. With The White Lotus complete, the focus shifts to The Last of Us season 2, which will now air in the coveted Sunday night slot. Once “that scene” every video gamer knows is coming, the internet will break.
Enough about television. Let’s discuss some movies to watch this weekend before The Last of Us. HBO’s homepage is dominated by its most popular movies, including Y2K, Logan, and 2073. Let’s look further into the library and find something more underrated. Our three suggestions include a horror sequel, a sports story, and a DCEU entry.

Although it isn’t the totality of television, Netflix has spent billions of dollars to convince its users that the streamer has all the TV they could ever need. And Netflix indeed has more TV than anyone could watch throughout a lifetime.
