TrustKernel intros PlugOS for PlugMate, allowing Android to run on iPhone, Mac, and more – NotebookCheck.net News

PlugOS has made a formal debut as an Android-based secure operating system that PlugMate runs on. This combination offers the ability to run Android on different devices, including Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

TrustKernel has introduced PlugOS for PlugMate, which is a flash drive-sized device with a USB-C connector. As for the OS, it’s touted to be a secure operating system that’s based on Android. This combination allows users to securely run a separate OS through a host.

In other words, TrustKernel is presenting it like a self-contained Android computer. It relies on a host device for I/O and power, but performs all computations on its own. The device also keeps data in its own hardware. It’s similar to what Intel offered with its Compute Stick, but with USB-C, an Android-based OS, and a smaller form factor.

The device offers a plug-and-play experience, and with “cutting-edge security,” the company is targeting a wide range of audiences. Among them are those who are looking for a secure, self-contained physical device to store sensitive data.

Moreover, the company claims that PlugOS employs full-disk hardware encryption and pre-boot authentication to ensure authorized access. There are many self-destruct modes for instances when someone gains unauthorized access.

About compatibility, TrustKernel says that PlugMate can work when connected to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, or Windows device. As it runs on Android, users get the freedom to install and run apps from their preferred sources. However, given its small design, it’s very likely to struggle while running resource-hungry applications.

For those wondering, PlugMate runs on an unspecified 8-core CPU that’s paired with 128 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM. TrustKernel notes that the Android device has virtualized sensors, which help to enhance privacy.

As for the price, TrustKernel has put a retail tag of $299 on PlugMate, but it’s currently selling for $199. At this price, if having a portable secondary device isn’t a concern, users can opt for a cheap Android phone (Moto G 2025 curr. $149.99 on Amazon), install a privacy-focused custom ROM such as GrapheneOS, and get the same functionality but with far more flexibility. This alternative can result in fewer hardware limitations as well.
