Unity reportedly introduces $250K+ “minimum contribution” for its biggest customers

This minimum commitment amount is determined based on your gross revenue from the previous 12 months

Unity is allegedly introducing a new annual fee for its largest Enterprise users, requiring a “minimum commitment” of $250,000 to $2 million, depending on each game’s revenue. It will reportedly be “applied towards your purchase of Unity subscription license and support products.”

A customer email shared with Mobilegamer.biz reportedly informed customers that this “minimum commitment” is determined by the game’s gross revenue over the previous year.

This fee is seemingly in addition to the 5% price hike that takes effect for Enterprise and Pro customers on January 12.

“If you are required to use Unity Enterprise based on the Unity Software Tier Eligibility detailed in the Unity Editor Software Terms, you will be subject to the Unity Enterprise Minimum Commitment Program,” the email allegedly said.

“This Program requires that you pay Unity a specified minimum commitment amount at the commencement of each Subscription Year, which will be applied towards your purchase of Unity subscription license and support products. This minimum commitment amount will be determined based on your Gross Revenue from the previous twelve months, as detailed in the table below.”

The table shows that games made with Unity with a gross revenue of $25 million or more in the previous year will have to give the “minimum commitment” of $250,000, with the price increasing as detailed below:

Made with Unity Gross Revenue for Previous Year Minimum Commitment for Given Year (USD)
    More than $25,000,000 up to $50,000,000 $250,000
    More than $50,000,000 up to $100,000,000 $500,000
    More than $100,000,000 up to $250,000,000 $1,000,000
    More than $250,000,000 $2,000,000

It follows a decision in 2023 to introduce – and then scrap – a Runtime Fee on every install of a Unity game after it reached certain install and revenue thresholds. There was considerable backlash to the move, and Unity eventually removed the Runtime Fee for any games built on a Unity Personal license.

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Unity for comment.
