Cross-platform games are becoming more commonplace on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Even so, a former Sony executive doesn’t envision exclusive games completely disappearing. While PC releases boast mass appeal, Shawn Layden argues that titles unique to the PS5 and Switch 2 have value.

With cross-platform games increasingly dominating, it may seem that console exclusivity is fading. Nevertheless, former leading PlayStation executive Shawn Layden still sees a place for these titles. Appearing on the Pause for Thought podcast, he believes that the identity of some franchises is interwoven with specific gaming systems.

During the interview, Layden says, “I don’t think every game should be console-exclusive.” Still, as long as platforms exist, “there is huge value to the brand in having strong exclusives.” He cites Mario on Nintendo consoles and Nathan Drake from Uncharted on PlayStation as examples. Gamers may make hardware buying decisions based on their favorite characters.

The one-time SIE America CEO also points out that systems like the Switch 2 and PS5 have distinct capabilities. Developers crafted Astro Bot as a showcase for the DualSense controller. At the same time, Nintendo has tried to make mouse mode with Joy-Cons more practical on its latest handheld. If Switch 2 or PS5 exclusive games go cross-platform, they may lose some of their hardware’s unique appeal.

Some games benefit from multi-platform releases

Layden admits that it makes less sense to confine multiplayer and live-service titles to certain consoles. This approach matches Sony’s recent strategy of porting properties like Helldivers 2 to Xbox. However, Ghost of Yotei is one of several single-player PS5 games that will persist as a PlayStation exclusive. The exception is with the PC, which often sees these titles after a fixed period.

Even though the traditional console model continues, that may not be the case indefinitely. The former executive recognizes the appeal of having a single device that can play everything. Microsoft is embracing Windows PCs as the future of Xbox hardware. Similarly, Valve hopes to reach new audiences with the Linux-powered Steam Machine. Both options offer a library of titles that outnumber what’s available on the PS5 or Switch 2.

Skeptics argue that the user bases for PCs and consoles remain separate. The latter is geared toward users who prefer a straightforward setup process. Exclusive games may survive until a company can merge the desktop and living room experience.
