Apple releases new AirTag with improved location precision

Apple has officially refreshed its popular item tracker with the launch of the Apple AirTag (second generation), bringing meaningful improvements to tracking accuracy, range and usability, while keeping the familiar design that users already know. The new AirTag is now available in Malaysia, positioning itself as a smarter and more capable companion for keeping tabs on everyday essentials such as keys, wallets, bags and even luggage.

Visually, the new AirTag looks almost identical to its predecessor, retaining the compact, coin-like form factor that fits existing accessories and key rings. The biggest changes are found inside, where Apple has equipped the tracker with its latest second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. This upgrade significantly improves Precision Finding, extending its effective range by up to around 50 percent compared to the original AirTag, allowing users to locate misplaced items from farther away with more accurate directional guidance when using compatible iPhones.

Apple has also enhanced the AirTag’s Bluetooth performance, improving general detection range when Precision Finding is not available, such as when an item is further away and relying on the broader Find My network. To make nearby searches easier, the built-in speaker has been redesigned to be noticeably louder, making it simpler to hear alerts even in noisy environments or across multiple rooms.

Another notable upgrade is expanded device support. Precision Finding can now be accessed not only from iPhones, but also directly from compatible Apple Watch models, including the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, giving users an additional and more convenient way to locate items without reaching for their phone.

Despite the internal upgrades, Apple has retained the practical elements that made the original AirTag appealing. The new model continues to use a user-replaceable CR2032 battery with an expected battery life of over a year, and it maintains an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, making it suitable for daily use. It also remains deeply integrated with Apple’s Find My ecosystem, allowing users to track items on a map, enable Lost Mode and receive notifications when an AirTag is detected by nearby Apple devices. Privacy protections remain in place as well, with end-to-end encryption, rotating identifiers and alerts designed to prevent unwanted tracking.

In Malaysia, the new AirTag is priced at RM129 for a single unit, while a four-pack is available for RM429. Buyers can order it through the Apple Store online, Apple’s physical retail channels and authorised Apple resellers nationwide, with free personalised engraving still offered at no extra cost.

With its improved tracking range, louder alerts and broader device support, the second-generation AirTag refines an already popular accessory rather than reinventing it. For Apple users in Malaysia who rely on the Find My ecosystem, the updated AirTag offers a more reliable and convenient way to keep track of the items that matter most.
