Atari is partnering with B3 to bring several titles onto the blockchain for the first time, beginning with the game that started it all: Pong.

The game set the standard for the gaming industry decades ago, and multiple Atari titles serving as cultural touchstones that resonate across generations. By bringing these experiences onchain with B3, Atari is bridging the gap between gaming nostalgia and cutting-edge blockchain tech.

Built by Coinbase alums, B3 is the first Layer 3 open gaming ecosystem powering the next generation of gaming experiences to make games fun again.

Through its infrastructure, B3 empowers game studios and devs of all sizes to deploy custom gamechains, share in ecosystem revenue and scale their games seamlessly across chains and networks, the companies said.

Other studios and titles currently on B3 include Heli Attack, Parallel, Mighty Action Heroes, GOAT Gaming and SuperGaming – you can view them all here.

Since its launch, B3’s ecosystem has tried to get traction, having onboarded over six million wallets and processed over 200 million transactions.

Players can instantly access games across multiple chains with a single login, removing the complex barriers typically associated with blockchain gaming. The platform’s rapid growth to over 140,000 daily active players demonstrates the demand for accessible, enjoyable gaming experiences that put fun first.

Tyler Drewitz, head of special projects and director at Atari X, said in message to GamesBeat that Atari has always been a pioneer in gaming.

“Moving our classic titles onchain represents the next frontier for us because it’s not just about following a trend — it’s recognizing blockchain technology offers unprecedented opportunities for ownership and community participation that reinforces our vision for the future of gaming,” Drewitz said. “Our games have always belonged to the community in a sense; blockchain allows them to belong to the players in a very real way by giving them the freedom to extend and enhance the experiences Atari created.”

He said Atari chose B3 as it stands out for its deep understanding of both gaming heritage and blockchain’s potential.

“They had a vision for Atari that respected our classics while enhancing them through its open gaming ecosystem. Their commitment to creating genuine value rather than just tokenizing assets helped us understand onchain gaming isn’t just about speculation; it’s about creating new possibilities for play, creation, and community. B3’s platform allows us to honor our legacy while embracing innovation, which is exactly the balance we wanted to strike,” Drewitz said.

As for Atari’s thoughts on the future of gaming, Drewitz said nostalgia is powerful, but it won’t keep games around forever.

“We see gaming’s future as increasingly community-driven and permissionless. By bringing Atari classics onchain, we’re inviting a new generation of creators to make these era-defining games open-source and remixable because we believe they’ll actually become better through community contributions. It’s preservation through evolution, and that’s incredibly exciting,” Drewitz said.

He added, “The most incredible aspect of bringing Atari’s games onchain is the removal of traditional boundaries between developer and player. When Pong or Asteroids is made available onchain, we’re not just preserving gaming history – we’re inviting everyone to participate in its evolution. Imagine what can happen when thousands of creative minds build upon these foundational games, adding new dimensions while maintaining the core elements that made them so special.”
