What actually works when Apple syncing gets in the way

    Updated on January 12, 2026

    The Download

    • Turn off iCloud syncing so you can delete photos from your iPhone but keep them in the cloud.
    • Use Google Photos as an alternative to iCloud for storing and backing up your pictures.
    • Switching to a different iCloud account lets you keep photos in the old account while deleting them from your device.

iCloud is the default backup for photos and videos. However, deleting any photo from the iPhone will also remove it from iCloud. This article will present workarounds to delete photos from the iPhone while retaining them in iCloud.

How Do I Delete Photos From My iPhone but Not iCloud?

Depending on your needs, you can try several methods to clear up space on your iPhone.

    Switch Off iCloud

iCloud Photos syncing is enabled by default on every iPhone. As long as your iCloud account has enough space, it automatically syncs with your iPhone’s Photos app. This means:

    • Photos on the iPhone and iCloud are identical, not separate copies.
    • Any photo deleted from your iPhone is also deleted from iCloud if syncing is enabled.

Here are the steps to turn off iCloud syncing.

    1. Open Settings from your iPhone home screen and select your profile name.

    2. On the Apple ID/Apple Account screen, select iCloud > Photos.

    3. Use the toggle switch for Sync this iPhone to disable syncing.

    4. With the connectivity between iPhone and the iCloud disabled, you can safely delete photos from your iPhone.

Back Up Your Photos With iCloud Alternatives

Utilizing another cloud storage as a photo backup is a simple solution. Options include Google Photos, Dropbox, or Microsoft OneDrive. Google Photos is especially effective for creating a photo backup independent of iCloud.

    1. Download and open the Google Photos app.

    2. Sign in to Google Photos using the desired Google account.

    3. Select your Google profile photo or initials in the top right corner.

    4. Select Settings > Backup and enable the feature.

    5. Select Backup quality to store photos in their original resolutions or reduced quality.

    6. Tap Confirm to start the backup process.

The backup can take some time, depending on the number of photos and videos. Once completed, you can delete photos from the iPhone’s Photos app. All backed-up photos and videos remain accessible in the Google Photos app and on the web, though they can only be removed from Google Photos.

    Use an Alternate iCloud Account

Logging out and switching to a different iCloud account can be cumbersome, but it allows you to keep photos in iCloud while deleting them from your iPhone.

Photos will remain in the original iCloud account, and you can sync new content with the new iCloud account.

    1. Select Settings.

    2. Tap your name at the top of the Settings options.

    3. Select Sign Out from the bottom of the screen. Enter your Apple Account password to turn off Find My Phone and delink your phone from this iCloud account.

    4. Log in to a new account by selecting Settings > Apple Account.

In some versions of iOS, this option is called “Apple ID.”

    5. Now, delete photos from the iPhone. The backup copies will not be deleted from the old iCloud account.

Consider this solution for managing extensive photo collections while keeping them within the Apple ecosystem, accessible from all your Apple devices.

    Tip:

If you want to recover an image you deleted, check the Recently Deleted folder in the Photos app and your iCloud account. You have 30 days to restore pictures you remove.

    FAQ

    • There’s currently no method to instantly delete all of your photos. However, you can quickly clear your library using the process for deleting multiple photos on your iPhone. Open Photos > All Photos > tap Select. Swipe right to left across the bottom row of pictures, then drag up to select all your photos, and tap the Trash can icon.

    • Removing items from your Photos app is only half of the process. To get rid of them for good, you also need to clear them from the Recently Deleted folder. Otherwise, your iPhone will delete them automatically after 30 days. To do that, open the Photos app and select Albums > Recently Deleted > unlock your album with Touch ID or Face ID > and tap Delete All.
